Specializing in outdoor weddings and portrait sessions for laid back, fun, and creative individuals.

Nature is my biggest inspiration, outdoor weddings are my specialty.  My approach to wedding photography is to stay out of the way for the majority of the day, capturing moments at a distance that you yourself probably didn’t even catch.  I want to build a relationship with every couple that I work with.  When I arrive on your wedding day, I want you to feel like one of your bridesmaids just showed up.  A year down the road, I want you to call me up so we can go grab a coffee.

Portrait sessions are typically around 60 minutes long and can be used for engagement photos, senior portraits, maternity, family photos, head shots for creative professionals, and boudoir.  I want to capture you being your true self either in your natural environment or out in nature.  Little direction, no backdrops, and no “cheese” unless we go out for some pizza after your photo session is finished.

Virginia Wedding Photographer

Blacksburg Portrait Photographer

Hello, welcome to my website!

I am a wedding photographer who lives in Blacksburg, Virginia, but I have also photographed weddings in Charlotte and Asheville, North Carolina; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and all over the Southwestern Virginia area including Richmond, Roanoke, Salem, Vinton, Galax, and Floyd.  I’m definitely down to travel to you if you help me find a way to get there and place to stay!

So a little bit of history, I have been taking photos for as long as I can remember – I have a shoebox filled with photos of the sky, pets, family, and friends as far back as when I was 5 years old with a little plastic film camera in my hand (maybe even further).  I am mostly a self-taught photographer, but I also enrolled at a few photography courses at a local community college to learn how to work in the darkroom and utilize Photoshop for editing.  I photographed my first wedding in 2008 for a long time friend and LOVED it so much I kept at it and ended up turning it into a wedding and portrait photography business!

I think it can be hard to put a label on my style, but if I had to describe it I would say that it falls somewhere between photojournalism and fine art photography.  On the wedding day, I stay out of the way as much as possible trying to let emotions and moments evolve and capture them for you to treasure forever.  You, your family, and your friends will likely not even notice me sneaking around the edges.  I will help guide your motions into loose, natural poses when it is time for formal photographs and occasionally I will let you know if your dress needs to be fixed or your hair is messed up or tell you to stop over a few steps to get into the most beautiful light.  Another fun fact about my wedding day coverage: my mother is typically my second photographer for wedding coverage so this is kind of a family business (PS, if you liked to sass your mama when you were little, I highly recommend hiring her to work for you when you are an adult)!

In addition to weddings, I also love portrait photography in general whether it be a couple in love (engaged or otherwise), boudoir photos for a bride to be to give as a gift on her wedding day, maternity session with a glowing mother to be, a tiny newborn baby in its natural environment (I’m not a fan of funny poses and excessive props), or senior portraits for a high schooler or college student getting ready to embark on the new adventures that the world has to offer them.

I have two goals for every single person that has trusted me with the honor of photographing them, for you to be in love with your images and that we build a friendship that will continue on for years to come.  If you do not tag me on ridiculous memes on Instagram or call me up for a cup of coffee on a whim, I will die a little bit on the inside.

Are you looking for a photographer who is a little bit quirky?  Are you getting married outdoors (because that is my bread and butter favorite type of wedding)?  Take a look around my website and see if you think that my photo style and personality might mesh with yours, and when you are ready, fill out my contact form at the big button on the top right that says “HIRE ME”.

Q: “But Holly, I don’t actually need a photographer for anything right now, how can I keep up with you so I know how to nail you down when the timing is right?”

A: "Excellent question proverbial new friend!  First, please sign up for my newsletter below.  I’m not spammy, you probably won’t even hear from me more than once a month so you might also want to follow me on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and/or Pinterest."

Top 3 Reasons to Give Me a Call:

  1. My albums are *kind of* super amazing high quality heirlooms that will help you and future generations of your family remember how gorgeous your big day was (and help determine what features your future grandchildren got from which side of the family).
  2. While I can be a bit of an introvert, once you get to know me, I’m very down to earth and I crack a lot of borderline inappropriate jokes.
  3. I’m so unobtrusive that you might think I never showed up at your wedding…  Well, you will know I am there, but your aunts and uncles might think you forgot to hire a wedding photographer.

And an Extra Credit Reason:

I will start succulent plants for you off of my very own plant babies and I will send you things I find online that remind me of you like Pinterest recipes, inflatable unicorn horns for cats (do it, click those words, it actually exists), and works from whatever abstract artist I happen to be obsessed with that week.  If you are REALLY extra lucky, I might make you a pretty little "shabby chic" inspired floral dream catcher which happens to be my other obsession.
