Book Review: "Simply Calligraphy: A Beginner's Guide to Elegant Lettering" by Judy Detrick

While I’ve been obsessed with calligraphy for some time now, I find it COMPLETELY intimidating to the point that I refused to even try it so I figured picking up a copy of “Simply Calligraphy: A Beginner’s Guide to Elegant Lettering” could be the push that I needed to give hand lettering a try.  I find calligraphy completely hypnotic, I love to peruse videos on Instagram of calligraphers in hopes of one day being able to have some pretty penmanship myself.

I liked the simplicity of this book, both in the content and the design and its relatively small size.  It is an excellent starter book for learning calligraphy for total beginners like myself.  The style of the lettering being taught in this book didn’t end up being quite the style I wanted to learn, it is classical italic calligraphy whereas I was hoping for something a little loopier/girly, but I suppose with practice you begin to incorporate your own style to the techniques that are taught in the book.  It is a good publication for complete beginners.

I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.
