10 Tips for Choosing Engagement Session Outfits

How to Prepare for Engagement Photos: What to Wear

  1. Bring at least 2 comfortable, fitted outfits that reflect your personalities – one dressy option and one casual, everyday option.  Want something extra special?  Check out the selection of dresses and jewelry on Rent the Runway!
  2. Finalize your clothing choices before the day of your engagement session, you don’t want to be scrambling around 30 minutes before your session time cursing at your favorite jeans for being dirty.
  3. Do a test run of your outfits – put them on to make sure that they fit, look good together, and that no big stain or hole has reared its ugly head.
  4. Coordinate outfits, but don’t fully match. Match the type of dress (casual with casual, dressy with dressy) and avoid matching head-to-toe, it didn’t work for Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake so it won’t work for us commoners either.
  5. Choose coordinating colors – If you will be using your engagement photos as decor at your wedding reception or as part of your guest book, try to match your wedding color scheme to your engagement outfits for consistency.  Or choose 2-3 colors from a room where you will be hanging prints of your engagement photos to build your color palette.
  6. Don’t like those color options or want something totally different for one of your outfit options?  Look for one bright, bold accent color and pair it with neutrals.
  7. Accessorize – don’t be afraid to spice your outfit up with a statement necklace, a scarf, cardigan, earrings; for the fellas – a tie, bow tie, or sports jacket. Not only do layers create visual interest in photographs, but pieces can easily be removed to change the entire appearance of the outfit without a full wardrobe change.
  8. If your fiance doesn’t want to get too dressy up,you can have him pair a sports jacket with jeans for the more dressed-up look.
  9. Treat Yo’ Self – Go get a manicure, we’ll be taking photos that show off your beautiful engagement ring so you’ll want your hands to look their best. While you’re at it, have your hair and makeup done professionally also. False eyelashes look AMAZING in photographs.
  10. Whatever you do, avoid the following at all cost: logos and wording on your clothing, busy patterns, and sneakers (especially since they only seem to come in neon colors these days).

What to Wear: Boudoir + Bridal Boudoir Photography

After months of thinking about doing a boudoir photo session you have finally booked your boudoir photographer

Now that your adrenaline is really pumping it is time to do a little planning and go shopping for lingerie pieces to wear for your photos! Even if there is a limit on the number of outfit changes you can have during your boudoir session, make sure to bring as many clothing, lingerie, shoe, and accessory choices as possible. Your photographer can help style your outfit and choose what will look best in the photos.

Boudoir Wardrobe Pieces You Might Want to Bring

  • Vintage lingerie pieces
  • Slips
  • A few different shirts including a fitted cotton t-shirt
  • Scarf or Sash for around your waist
  • Cardigans
  • Sweater
  • Matching bra + panty set
  • Neglige/teddy/bodysuit
  • Corset/bustier
  • A robe
  • Silk shorts

Boudoir Accessories

In addition to a variety of clothing and lingerie choices, you should also try to bring along a good selection of accessories and maybe even some props. Common choices are a garter belt and stockings, a variety of shoes (the higher the heels the better), and items that are meaningful to your significant other that could be used as props.

Bridal Boudoir Photography

If you are planning your boudoir photo session to be a wedding gift to your fiance, don’t forget to bring along additional bridal accessories like the jewelry you will be wearing on your wedding day, your veil, and your garter.

Where to Buy Boudoir Outfits

You are investing in a sultry boudoir photo shoot, go out and buy yourself some cute new knickers to wear for it! Most of the pieces shown in this blog post are high end lingerie that can be found on my Polyvore Boudoir Collection along with information on where they can be purchased. Some of my other favorite stores to find beautiful intimates are Journelle, Top Shop, ASOS, Urban Outfitters, Free People, Anthropolgie, ModCloth, Forever 21, Etsy, and Ebay (great place to find vintage lingerie pieces).

Additional Prep

Make sure you go out and get a manicure and pedicure before your photo session. If you spray tan or dye your hair, make sure you get it touched up right before your shoot. And since you will be looking so fabulous after your photo shoot, you should also plan a hot date or girls night out afterwards!
