Salem Fair with Alli + Emma

I love taking photos at the fair, the beautiful colors and lights make for an amazing backdrop for portraits.  I met Alli and Emma through Instagram and if you connect with me there and you'll probably see your face here at some point too!  Originally I was thinking pastel outfits to match the pastel backdrop, but it turns out these girls have the same feels about colors and style as me - all black everything all the time and honestly I think it is probably better that way!

Also, check out how cute these baby goats are.

Personal Project: “Portraiture and Floriculture”

Earlier this year I was asked to participate in a gallery show at the Artful Lawyer in downtown Blacksburg. The theme of the show was flowers and even though I already had many photos that I could have just had printed and displayed, I think that participating in themed exhibits gives me creative photography ideas and a wonderful opportunity to flex my artistic muscles to produce something new. My original concept was to have a glamorous fashion photography feel – beautiful portraits of women that incorporate flowers. With limited access to affordable and different flowers in the middle of winter I decided to try something completely new. I asked Stephanie Washburn, my dear friend and a local artist, if she would collaborate with me on this project. I had the photographs printed on canvas and Stephanie painted acrylic flowers directly on top. Fun fact: Stephanie was also one of the models for this project along with Taylor and Julia.

These canvases with original paintings are still available for purchase.  Contact me if you are interested.  The original pieces are for sale through my shop link.

Our Artist Statement: “This collaboration of photographer and painter explores the relationship of portraiture and floriculture.”

Nature and flowers are two of my biggest inspirations so if you or someone you know is a wonderful friendly florist in the Blacksburg/Roanoke area let me know, I would love to have a florist to work with on a regular basis!

Blacksburg Faux Bridal Portraits

I met Taylor through Instagram, if you follow me and interact with me on there or any other form of social media, there is a pretty good chance we’ll become friends and end up inviting you to come model for me at some point. Some of the photos were taken at the greenhouses on the campus of Virginia Tech (right next to the Hahn Horticulture Garden) and the others were taken around downtown Blacksburg.  The necklace is from Chloe + Isabel; dresses are from Bliss by Monique Lhuillier and Nicole Miller.

If you couldn’t tell by the two different wedding dresses in these photos, this is a faux bridal session so if you are Kaylee’s friend don’t get freaked out that you missed the memo.  I bought some wedding dresses earlier this year to play around with for photo sessions.  Kaylee is a hair and makeup artist so she usually spends her time behind the scenes…  It is always nice to get her beautiful face in front of my camera.  The first necklace is vintage, it belongs to Kaylee’s mother, the second necklace is from Chloe + Isabel .  The second wedding gown is by Winnie Couture.  Lace edged veil is from Simply Bridal.  These photos were taken at the Hahn Horticulture Garden on campus at Virginia Tech and in the green house adjacent to the garden.

I met Natalee through Instagram earlier this year. She’s a gorgeous girl and an fierce athlete.  How amazing are her eyes?  Her hair and makeup was done by Kaylee Graves; the first necklace is from Sabika, second necklace is from Chloe + Isabel.  These bridal portraits were taken in Hahn Horticulture Garden on the campus of Virginia Tech as well as in the greenhouses next to the garden.

Margarita en Pointe | Washington, DC Ballerina Portraits

In May I took a mini road trip up to Maryland and Washington DC with my dear friend Joli of Actin’ Up With Books by my side.  Our first stop was in Maryland to have lunch with Margarita and her husband David followed by a metro ride into Washington DC to take some ballerina-inspired photos on Capitol Hill.  If Margarita’s beautiful face looks familiar to you, it might be because I photographed her engagement and wedding last year!  I love keeping in touch with previous couples that I’ve worked with, even if they do live 4 hours away.  It was so nice to see them again nearly a year after their wedding. I have been so fortunate to have been able to photograph such lovely weddings of truly amazing and sweet people. It was an honor to have Margarita stunning face in front my lens for a third time. I am so thankful that she stumbled upon my website when she was searching for a wedding photographer!

The location of the last photo is a place called Summerhouse right outside of the Capitol Building which looked completely out of place. The image is made of 10 different photos stitched together.

Alexa Poletti "Dark Hearts"

Alexa Poletti as the Dark Queen of Hearts wearing the Rhapsody in Rose wig from Gothic Lolita Wigs

This is the sixth and final photo set from my trip through Richmond, Virginia and Washington, DC back in November. I mentioned to Alexa that I wanted to do a fairy tale themed set of photos. Her amazing selection of wigs, color contacts, and wardrobe helped make a dark princess set of photos happen. At one point while we were out shooting this set, a little boy came up and stole Alexa's crown. His sister was convinced that Alexa was a real princess, so cute!
